Final First Year Project

We did a few smaller projects during the first year but our main one was at the end, we could pick out own brief, so I chose to look it to creating a piece of furniture that would bring the home together.

Through research and development I chose to create a kitchen table, it was to be interactive, to stop household being on there private items of technology and encourage communication. I designed a fairly modern piece that would be simply enough to fit into a variety of households.

For this project I had to give an 8 minute presentation and explain how it could work.

First Uni Project- Lighting

After starting university our first main project was focusing on lighting, and my theme at the start was going to be creating something environmentally friendly.

My may research was based around cardboard, how it had been used in the past, not just in lighting but also in a variety of ways. I particularly liked pieces that were using a ‘crisscross’ technique, and started to sketch and develop along these lines.

However some where along the process I changed my material to copper. Not only would it be stronger to use, but it would reflect the light, needing less power. As I was not aloud to use mains powered lighting.

Although I had worked a lot in light before I had never used Photoshop, so this project aloud me to learn a few new skills.

21st Party

This July I turned 21, and so we had a big party to celebrate.

After working for a local catering company for 6 years I have seen my fair share of parties, some spectacular and some not so much. I with this in mind I thought it necessary to have some sort of theme and focus points.  With the party being held on the farmyard in one of the potatoes stores I thought it may be appropriate to bring this into my theme, however I still want there to be a glamorous aspect to it.

With this in mind I managed to get my hands on a number of pallets (not hard on a potato farm!) I had them drilled together a piece of ply board placed onto, sprayed white and there you go, one champagne bar!
And it just happened to be that the gaps in the pallets were the perfect size to store the empty champagne bottles.

As the yard is so large I wanted to make sure that the guests didn’t feel lost in such a big area, and that they were meant to be there. So I decided to hire some large trees, lucky I managed to bargain with a local garden center to hire them for the weekend, otherwise it could have been pricey! And re-planted them is some of our own apple bins, making sure the name was on show. Apple and potato boxes seemed to prove very useful for the party as good barriers and wall to hide anything not wanting to be seen.

Keeping to the potato theme that was emerging I had some potato chitting trays adapted so that canapĂ© could be served of them, I told the caterers ‘Bigger the better!’

Leaving the potatoes outside, inside the barn was were the glamorous bit kicked in, as it was a black tie party. We had the barn marquee lined with lighting above the dance floor, which was a great touch.  The main feature as you walked in was the white circular bar, which was well used that night!
The colouring through out the party was black and white; the black table clothes white chairs and black and white dance floor.
As it was a party not a wedding I wanted to stay away from using flowers, instead I had moss-covered candelabras and covered vases on the tables, and there were spotlights onto them, which added hugely to the affect.

Have to say planning this party was almost as much fun as the actual night itself, bring on 30!

BooksTable

Instead of going to a car boot sale, I got in touch with a local book store, after seeing books at the previous car boots, I thought it could be quite fun to work with them. And to reduce cost I wanted to look elsewhere, I managed to get my hands on quite a few books, at a good price.

With more sketching being done, and left over Perspex, which had cost a bomb, I choose to carry on the theme from the TelephoneTable.

This was a very simple to create using only a glue gun, however if I were to produce this to be used in the home, I would think of a different method, maybe by drilling them together.
